Man in police custody dies after swallowing baggie

MINNEAPOLIS — Minneapolis police are investigating after a man pulled over in a traffic stop died after choking on a baggie filled with suspected crack cocaine.

Minneapolis police say the officer pulled over a vehicle at 11:30 p.m. March 29 and found the male passenger had a baggie in his mouth.

The officer tried to retrieve it, but the man swallowed it then started choking. An ambulance took him to the Hennepin County Medical Center.

There, doctors peformed emergency surgery to remove the baggie and its contents. The man died Monday of complications.

Officers recovered and saved the baggie after it was removed. Tests are pending on the substance inside the baggie, but police suspect it’s crack.

The man’s name was not immediately released. An autopsy is planned.

The officer who made the stop was put on three-day administrative leave, which is standard after critical incidents.
