Man’s leg injury leads to head injury

BENSON, Minn. — A Swift County commissioner was hospitalized after a strange series of events left him with a severe head injury.

It started when Commissioner Pete Peterson of rural Benson cut his leg while gutting a deer Saturday, said his son, Simeon Peterson. While driving himself to Swift County-Benson Hospital, Pete Peterson lost consciousness, and his truck ran off the highway and hit a tree.

Peterson was taken to the Benson hospital and then transferred to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, where a spokeswoman said he was listed in serious condition Wednesday.

Surgeons removed a portion of Peterson’s skull to relieve swelling and hemorrhaging, the spokeswoman said.
