MASON CITY, Iowa — A Mason City hospital is cutting its work force.
Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa announced Wednesday that it will reduce staff by 44 employees before July 1. The hospital has about 2,700 workers.
Officials say direct patient caregivers are not affected.
The hospital announced in March that it was cutting staff by 13, and anticipated more cuts within the next few months.

The hospital cites several factors for the reductions, including further cuts in state and federal reimbursement, lower than project patient volume, increasing operation expenses and increasing amount of unfunded care provided to uninsured and underinsured patients.
