Minneapolis singer-songwriter Mason Jennings has been described as one of the best-kept secrets in pop music. Don't tell that to his cult-like followers though.

The musician has built up strong support in the Twin Cities through regular gigs there and is making a name for himself on the national level by putting his music out on Jack Johnson's record label, Brushfire Records, and being picked up for the soundtrack for Chris Malloy's latest documentary, "180 Degrees South."

Still he never strays far from his roots.

For his debut album in 1997, Jennings played all of the instruments himself into an analog four-track. And while he's backed by a band now, Jennings continues to blend what's been described as

"the personal insights of a poet, the political broadsides of a protest singer, and the broad musical eclecticism of a jazz musician with a rock & roller's passion."
