Mavis Gustafson Hegge -- Stewartville

STEWARTVILLE -- A memorial service for Mavis Gustafson Hegge was Friday at the United Methodist Church in Arvada, Colo. A graveside service will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Stewartville at a later date.

Mrs. Hegge, 87, of Arvada, formerly of Stewartville, died Feb. 19, 2004, in Arvada.

Mavis Gustafson was born May 30, 1916, near Clarinda, Iowa, moved to Pleasant Valley Township, Mower County, in 1924 and graduated from Stewartville High School in 1933. After completing Austin Normal School in 1935, she taught in Adams and High Forest Township rural schools. She also taught in St. Charles and Cloquet, Minn.; and for 23 years at Madison, Jefferson and Lincoln schools in Winona. She received a bachelor of science degree in 1954 and a master's in 1963. In 1977, she retired following a 40-year career of teaching and moved to Arvada to live with her daughter. She married Palmer Hegge in 1937, and they later were divorced.

Survivors include her daughter, Bonnie Hegge of Arvada. Four brothers preceded her in death.
