RUSHFORD — The funeral for Max E. Benson will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Rushford Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Roger Michaelson officiating. Burial will be in Rushford Lutheran Cemetery, with the Rushford American Legion providing military honors.
Mr. Benson, 74, of rural Rushford, died Saturday (April 12, 2008) at his home.
Born July 21, 1933, in Alexander, Iowa, he grew up in Alexander until age 16, when his family moved to Grand Meadow. He was a 1950 graduate of Elkton High School, and served in the Army during the Korean War. On Jan. 21, 1961, he married Bev Larson in Austin. The couple moved to Peterson in 1964, then to their current residence east of Rushford in 1975.
Mr. Benson farmed all his life. He was a member of Rushford Lutheran Church, where he taught Sunday school for more than 20 years, and was a past commander of the Rushford VFW.
He was a member of the American Legion, the Minnesota Thoroughbred Association, the Registered Red Angus Association and the Money Creek Township Board, and was one of the originators of the Root River Saddle Club. His passions included horses, cattle, conservation and his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife; a son, McLean (Becky) of Winona; three daughters, Tracy (Dana) Coulter and Toni (Kenny) Highum, both of Rushford, and Terri Benson of St. Paul; six grandchildren; three brothers, Rex of Plano, Texas, Reg (Diane) of Grand Meadow and Duane (Melissa) of Lanesboro; and two sisters, Dixie (Ron) Mathews of Rhinelander, Wis., and Val Jean (Tom) Thorsen of Grand Meadow. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Tricia, and a brother, Dale.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hoff Funeral Homes-Rushford Chapel, and an hour before the service Thursday at the church.
