Mayo overcomes fast JM start

Rochester Mayo spotted Rochester John Marshall a quick goal in the first 70 seconds and then came back to win 2-1 in a Big Nine Conference boys soccer game at Mayo Stadium on Thursday.

Mayo broke a 1-1 tie midway through the second half on a goal by Pete Bartleson. The Spartans defense and goalkeeper Phil Hartman made that lead hold up.

"It was a very close, physical meeting," said JM coach Tony Birch. "We sort of dominated the beginning and end, but Mayo had a run in the middle."

JM scored first just 66 seconds into the game when Jace Indrelie used his head to knock in crossing pass from Halil Dudakovic. Mayo tied the score four minutes before halftime on an unassisted goal by Mark Zietlow.

Shots were even at 17 for each team, but JM goalkeeper Pascaul Venter had to make 12 saves, and Mayo's Hartman made six.

Lourdes shuts out K-M

Rochester Lourdes battled strong winds and Kasson-Mantorville's defense in a 3-0 win over the KoMets on Thursday at Fuad Mansour Field.

"It was really tough going against the wind; it was tough to play a decent game," said Lourdes coach Tom Kane. Lourdes improved to 8-1 overall.

Lourdes scored eight minutes into the game when Ryan Claeys converted a pass from Bayode Adafin. It was 1-0 at halftime.

Adafin scored the second goal on an assist from Aaron Good, 11 minutes into the second half. Henry Macken added an unassisted goal on a direct kick with 10 minutes left in the game.

David Kurland had a slow night in goal for Lourdes, as K-M had only six shots. KoMets goalkeeper Nathan Lipps was busier, with 28 shots in his direction.

"Lipps had a great game in goal for them," Kane said.

Lourdes was without two starters, Mark Lembach and Matt Lembach, who were nursing minor injuries. Kane said they will be ready Saturday when the No. 4-ranked Eagles entertain No. 7 Orono in an 11 a.m. game at Faud Mansour Field No. 7.
