Mayo rebounds from tourney setback

The "game after" went quite nicely for the Rochester Mayo girls basketball team.

The Spartans, who were thoroughly disappointed with their play a week ago in losing the championship game of the Rotary tournament to Lakeville, bounced back from that setback in style Friday.

Mayo used terrific outside shooting to smother Albert Lea 73-33 in Big Nine Conference action.

"I was pleased with our level of play," Mayo coach Les Cookman said. "We played like we can."

The Spartans, (7-0 in the league, 10-1 overall) made 9 of 16 three-point attempts. That included a 4-for-5 night from beyond the arc by reserve point guard Melissa O'Brien. Michelle Linbo was 3-for-3 on three-pointers.

Cookman was pleased to see O'Brien have such a productive night.

"She can really shoot the ball," he said. "There have been times when she's done that before. Tonight she lit it up. Her only miss was in and out."

Mayo shot 30 of 57 overall from the field. O'Brien led the way with 16 points. Linbo had 13 and Kristi Boese 12.
