Mayo starts fast, picks up Big Nine win

Scoring in the opening minute of the first period put Rochester Mayo on top to stay in Thursday night’s girls hockey game against the Austin Packers.

The visiting Mayo Spartans scored a total of two goals in the first period, and went to record a 5-0 win over the Packers in the Big Nine Conference game at Riverside Arena.

Keri Pickel scored at 19 seconds into the first period, assisted by Mary Grace Flesher, and the visiting Spartans had the lead right out of the gate. Flesher then scored inside the final five minutes of the first period for a 2-0 lead.

Making matters worse, the Packers put the Spartans on the power play midway through the second period. Flesher banged home the special teams goal as Mayo pulled away. The visitors then added another late goal before the close of the second period.

"Even though we got down by four goals in the second period, the girls skated hard to the end," Austin coach Denny Bray said. "We need to get the penalties down and create more shots on goal."

Mayo had nearly double the amount of shots as Austin in the third period. This gave the visitors more chances to pad their lead and they did so with just under five minutes to play in the game.

Sam Carlson of Mayo scored her first varsity goal to cap off the road win. This conference win gave the Spartans a sweep of the season series over the Packers.

Although they had some scoring chances along the way, the Austin girls couldn’t find a way to put the puck in the net. Mayo goalie Rebecca Graham, a ninth-grader, had 24 saves for the shutout.

"Rebecca (Graham) played well in earning the shutout," Mayo coach Jeff Phillips said. "She has been working hard in practice to refine a couple of aspects of her game and it paid off (tonight). Defensively our goal was to control our slot and cut down on chances in that area."

Austin (9-11-3) will try to snap a two-game losing skid on Saturday afternoon with a home game against Rochester Century at Riverside Arena.
