Medical marijuana widely available

The thoughtful editorial in the Rochester Post-Bulletin on April 24, concerning medical marijuana is excellent ("Is Minnesota ready for marijuana as medicine?").

We would only add that medical marijuana has been available throughout the United States for some time. The prescription drug Marinol (dronabinol) is described in the 2008 Physicians’ Desk Reference on pages 335 and 3271-73 as a capsule containing delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, a naturally occurring component of Cannabis sativa L (Marijuana).

By using a prescription capsule instead of smoking pot, the patient ingests a known amount of drug and avoids the hazards of smoking. In addition, other people are not subjected to the hazards of secondhand smoke.
