Rochester native Mike Sherels has been invited for a free-agent tryout with the Minnesota Vikings.
Sherels, a three-year starting middle linebacker at the University of Minnesota, was informed by his agent Sunday night that the Vikings wanted him for a tryout. That runs Thursday through Sunday.
"I am a homestate guy, so I see this as a good opportunity," Sherels said by phone Sunday. "I am really excited about it."
Sherels was also led to believe that the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins had some interest in him.
Sherels is a John Marshall graduate.
