ST. PAUL — The longtime director of the Minnesota Historical Society is retiring after 33 years of service to the society.

Nina M. Archabal joined the Historical Society as historic preservation officer in 1977 and because its director in 1987. The Massachusetts native says she will stay on as director until the society's board chooses her successor.

The society has grown significantly during Archabal's tenure, particularly with the development of the Minnesota History Center. In addition to the center, Archabal oversees a statewide network of historic sites and museums visited annually by nearly a million people.
