Minneapolis gives green light for Walker site plan

Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS -- A city council committee approved the site plan for the Walker Art Center's $90 million expansion, but didn't endorse the demolition of the adjoining Guthrie Theater.

Tuesday's approval by the Zoning and Planning Committee is a crucial step in the Walker's plans. But committee members agreed that legally it does not further endorse the Guthrie's demolition, even though it's one of the final phases in the plan.

The Guthrie plans to move to the downtown riverfront, perhaps as early as 2005.
