ST. PAUL — The Minnesota Beef Expo is growing. More than 850 cattle were exhibited at the show. That number has grown so much that for the first time, organizers stalled some cattle in the horse barn at the Minnesota State Fair grounds because the cattle barn was full. Though finding room for everyone was a challenge, it was an encouraging development, said Jamie Purfeerst, event superintendent.

"We made it fit," Purfeerst said. "It is fun to see it get bigger."

Much of the growth has come from an increasing number of cattle exhibitors from outside Minnesota, Purfeerst said. As word spreads, more exhibitors are coming from South Dakota, Wisconsin, North Dakota and Iowa. Purfeerst doesn’t mind.

"Our goal is to keep making this bigger and better," Purfeerst said. "We started with ideas and this has morphed into a great show."

Youth get the spotlight on the second day of the Expo, which is traditionally held over MEA weekend. This year was no different, with hundreds of youth competing in fitting, judging and showmanship contests.
