Mock fans 15 in win over Mayo

DeAnna Mock pitched a six-hitter and struck out 15 as Rochester John Marshall rallied past Mayo 4-2 in Big Nine softball Tuesday.

The Spartans led 1-0 and 2-0, but each time Alyssa Mackey had a hit and scored a run to tie the game for the host Rockets.

Kristen Herges, who had an RBI single earlier in the game, started a two-run sixth inning in which the Rockets snapped a 2-2 tie. Herges singled and scored the eventual winning run.

Herges finished 3-for-3, and Mackey was 2-for-3 with a triple. Maly Schacht was 1-for-2 and scored a run.

"It was a good win for our team against a nice Mayo squad tonight," JM coach Thang Nguyen said. "Every time Mayo was able to score, our girls came right back and answered."

Carly Grassle had a strong offensive game for Mayo. She had half of the Spartans’ hits as she was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs score.

Leah VanWettering suffered the loss as she allowed seven hits and struck out four. The Spartans committed four errors in the field. VanWettering and Mock each walked just one batter.

"DeAnna pitched a nice game and her curve was really working," Nguyen said.

John Marshall is now 9-10, 9-7 Big Nine while Mayo slips to 7-12, 7-9 Big Nine. Both teams conclude the regular season on Friday. Mayo plays host to Big Nine leader Mankato West at 4:30 p.m. while JM is at Faribault at 5 p.m.
