ST. CLOUD, Minn. — St. Cloud’s City Council has chosen a name for the new Minnesota Highway 23 bridge over the Mississippi River — a name that harkens to the city’s heritage.
By a vote of 4-2, the council on Monday went with Granite City Crossing for the new bridge name instead of DeSoto Bridge, the name of the previous bridge.
DeSoto garnered the most votes in a combined online/telephone poll conducted to determine the finalists. Granite City Crossing received the second-highest number of votes.
Council President Bob Johnson says, "You can’t argue that granite isn’t a strong word."

The name will be submitted to St. Cloud-area legislators in St. Paul, who must pass a bill giving the bridge its official name.
The new bridge is under construction.
