The Med City’s newest hotel opened its doors for guests on Friday.
The just-completed, 89-room Candlewood Suiteshotel at 1640 S. Broadway is now open for business. It stands on the site where the more than 50-year-old Clarion Inn, formerly the Holiday Inn South, once stood.
The new hotel has a team of 18 employees. The rooms include kitchens and the hotel offers a laundry service.
South Dakota-based Lamont Cos.built the new hotel, after demolishing the previous one in 2017.Lamont Cos. purchased the Clarion/Holiday Inn South in 2016 for $5 million.
The South Dakota developers are not new to the Med City. They also built Rochester’s Holiday Innby the Miracle Mile Shopping Centeron Second Street in 2012.
In addition to the South Broadway hotel, a commercial complex is also being built by Lamont Cos. on the high-profile 5½-acre site. There is no word on tenants for the under-construction retail center yet.
A hotel has been active on the spot since November 1963, where the Holiday Inn South opened its doors. It dropped the Holiday Inn brand in 2010 and became the Clarion Inn. The hotel closed abruptly in 2016.
