Norbert J. Bergstrom — Austin

AUSTIN — A funeral Mass for Norbert J. Bergstrom will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Austin, with Rev. Joe Fogal officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Austin, with military rites by American Legion Post 91 and VFW Post 1216.

Mr. Bergstrom, 84, of Austin, died Sunday (Feb. 22, 2009) at his home.

Norbert John Bergstrom was born Sept. 11, 1924, in Miller, S.D. The family moved to Austin in 1933, and he graduated from Austin High School. He served in the Army during World War II from June 16, 1943, to Oct. 22, 1945, with the 517th Combat Team, 460th Parachute Artillery. He was awarded the distinguished Purple Heart. On April 16, 1947, he married Margaret E. Seys at St. Augustine Catholic Church. He was employed at Hormel Foods for 42 years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was a renowned welding craftsman.

Survivors include his wife; children, Monica Grimm, Ron (Mary Gaye), and R.J. (DeDee), all of Austin, Pam (Mike) Brady of Rochester, Jeff (Jeanne) of Litchfield, Lori Bergstrom (Kandi) of St. Paul and Terri Bergstrom of Austin; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Marg Fingarson of St. Cloud and Mary (Benno) Bissen of Austin. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Agnes (Hoban) Bergstrom; a sister, Katie Schlottman; and a great-grandson, Ellis Bergstrom.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Mayer Funeral Home, where there will be a 7 p.m. wake service. Visitation will also be an hour prior to the service Thursday at the church.
