Boys finish second Saturday in Packer Invitational

The Austin boys track and field team showed off for the home fans with a second-place finish in last weekend’s Packer Invitational.
This was the first competition of the season for the Austin boys at the Larry Gilbertson Track. There were a total of eight teams on hand for the meet.
Farmington finished first in the team tally, and Austin trailed by 22.5 points from the leader in the second spot.

Individually for the Packers on the day, Tim Erickson was first in the 800 meters.
Kyle Dammen of Austin finished second in the 1,600, but only because Robel Kebede set a new track record to take first in the event.
Will Darling won the 100 high hurdles. He ran over a half-second faster in the finals over his time in the preliminaries. Darling also won the 300 hurdles in running nearly a second faster than his seed time.
The 1600 relay team of Austin took the top spot. Will Darling, Michael Hirsch, Jacob Bentley, and Tim Erickson finished nearly six seconds head of the runner-up team from Farmington.
The 3,200 relay team of Jacob Larson, Christian Folken, Kevin Lyke, and Tim Erickson also set a track record in their second-place finish just a few seconds behind New Prague.
Austin boys track and field travels to Albert Lea this afternoon.

Girls finish seventh

The Austin High girls track and field team had a successful showing in last weekend’s Packer Invitational.
This was the second meet of the season for the Austin girls at the Larry Gilbertson Track. All the lanes were filled as there were a total of eight teams on hand for the meet.
New Prague finished first in the team tally, and Farmington was the runner-up. Austin finished in seventh-place with 34.5 team points.
Individually for the Packers on the day, Kelli Craven was fourth in the 300 hurdles. Kira Potach finished 11th and Sela Fadnes was 14th in this event. Fadness shaved nearly two seconds off her seed time to finish in the top 15.
The 400 relay team finished fourth. The Austin team of Anna Anderson, Sabrina Snater, MaKenzie Oldfather, and Britta Anderson was close to a second faster in the finals as compared to the seed time in this event.
In the field events, Craven had a fifth-place finish in the high jump. Katy Jorgenson was the highest finisher (seventh) for the Packers in the pole vault as she cleared the bar at nine-feet.
