Northeast Iowa dairy producers did much better in November than October and three of four budgets broke even or better, according to an analysis by Robert Tigner, Nebraska Extension Educator at McCook, Neb., and former northeast Iowa farm management specialist with ISU Extension.

"A big part of that improvement was from a Producer Price Differential that rose by 49 cents per hundredweight," Tigner wrote in his analysis of northeast Iowa November dairy budgets.

The Central Federal Milk Market Order price for butterfat rose by 28 cents per pound, while butterfat test was 0.09 percent higher. The protein price dropped by nearly 40 cents per pound with only a 0.09 percent rise in protein content. Feed prices dropped, corn down 4 cents per bushel, soybean meal down $17.90 per ton and fat dropped by about 1 cent per pound.

"All of these changes led to an increase of 46 cents per hundredweight for the 20,000 pound freestall budget, 53 cents for the 24,000 pound freestall budget," Tigner, who now works with Red Willow County Extension, wrote.
