Harlan O. Carlson Sr. — Austin

AUSTIN — The funeral for Harlan O. Carlson Sr. will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church in Blooming Prairie, with the Rev. Heidi Heimgartner officiating. Burial will be in First Lutheran Cemetery in Blooming Prairie with military rites by American Legion Post 52.

Mr. Carlson, 86, of Austin, formerly of Blooming Prairie, died Friday (Nov. 7, 2008) at the Austin Medical Center.

Harlan O. Carlson was born March 29, 1922, in Watertown, Minn. He grew up there and graduated from high school. He served in the Navy during World War II. He worked as a boilerman at the Blooming Prairie Creamery. On May 15, 1947, he married Marilyn Riffe in Watertown. He was employed by AMPI. The couple moved to Austin in 1978. He was a boilerman at St. Olaf Hospital, retiring in April 1987. He enjoyed traveling and tinkering on small engines and appliances.

He is survived by two sons, Russell, and Harlan Jr. of Austin; a daughter, Carolyn Lopez of Annapolis, Md.; two grandchildren, Taylor (Mark) Bliese and Christian Carlson of Austin; a great-granddaughter, Claire Bliese; and a sister, Ardelle Carlson of Waconia, Minn. Other survivors include two brothers-in-law, Leonard Anderson of Hibbing, Minn., and John (Deanne) Riffe of Paynesville, Minn.; and a sister-in-law, Faye Carlson of Waconia; He was preceded in death by his wife; a stillborn son; his parents, Adry and Esther (Nordstrom) Carlson; a brother, Cy Carlson; a sister, Joyce; and a son-in-law, Michael Lopez.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin.

Worlein Blooming Prairie Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are preferred to the First Lutheran Church in Blooming Prairie.
