Jan (Hertle) Kristal — Austin

AUSTIN — Jan (Hertle) Kristal, 56, of San Rafael, Calif., died April 2, 2009, following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Born Nov. 8, 1952, in Austin, she enjoyed playing on family farms as a child. She grew into a talented musician and played guitar, bass, ukulele and drums. She also loved ceramics, gardening, photography, traveling, politics, the arts and gourmet foods. She possessed a sharp wit and appreciated a good sense of humor.

She conducted research and was one of the leading experts in child temperament theory. She appeared on "Dateline NBC," authored the book "The Temperament Perspective" and taught psychology at Dominican University (Calif.) and San Francisco State. Throughout her life, she provided training for parents and professionals and enabled them to become better parents, therapists, doctors and teachers.

She is survived by her husband, Alan; daughters Nicole and Vanessa; and her father, Everett "Bud" Hertle.

A memorial service will be held April 19 at Guzman Lecture Hall, Dominican University, in San Rafael.

Memorials are preferred to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
