Leonard ‘Speed’ Egen— Stewartville
STEWARTVILLE — The funeral for Leonard "Speed" Egen was at 11 a.m. today at Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville. Burial was in St. Bernard’s Catholic Cemetery, Stewartville; the Stewartville American Legion and VFW Honor Guards provided military honors.
Mr. Egen, 88, formerly a longtime Stewartville resident, died Tuesday (Nov. 11, 2008) at Our House Memory Care Center in Austin, where he had resided for two years.
Born Feb. 8, 1920, in Stewartville, he graduated from Stewartville High School and attended Mankato Teachers College. He served in the Army in the Pacific Theater during World War II. After his discharge he returned to Stewartville, where he was a homebuilder and carpenter until his retirement.
On Feb. 6, 1987, he married Eleanor Johnson at Cape Coral, Fla. They were later divorced. Mr. Egen was a longtime member of Stewartville American Legion Post 164 and VFW Post 8980.

Survivors include three stepdaughters, Diana Johnson (Everett Rush) of Brownsdale, Cheryl (Jim) Wolfgram of McGregor, Minn., and Julie (Loren) Theel of Eyota; two stepsons, James (Lynn) Johnson of Rose Creek and Curtis Johnson of Kasson; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Beverly Reep of Lady Lake, Fla., Patty Butler of Las Vegas, and Carol Egen of San Francisco. Other survivors include 24 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters and five brothers.
Griffin-Gray Funeral Home of Stewartville was in charge of arrangements.
