GRAND MEADOW — The funeral for John "Jack" Kassel will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the United Church of Grand Meadow, with the Rev. Karen Ashton officiating. Burial will be in Grand Meadow Cemetery.
Mr. Kassel, 81, of Grand Meadow, died Friday (April 11, 2008) at the Grand Meadow Healthcare Center, where he had resided for a brief time.
He was born Nov. 17, 1926, in Ayrshire, Iowa, and graduated from high school in Ayrshire. In 1943, during World War II, he went into the Navy and was honorably discharged in 1947. He then moved back to Ayrshire.

On April 2, 1950, he married Norma Stripling at the Lutheran church in LaVerne, Iowa. In February 1953, they moved to the Grand Meadow area and farmed for many years.
The couple moved to Grand Meadow in the fall of 1995.
Mr. Kassel enjoyed playing cribbage at the local diner, cards, coffee, and his grandkids and great-grandkids. He was a member of American Legion Post 140. In earlier years, he and his wife were active in their church.
Survivors include three sons, John of Austin, Dan of Grand Meadow and Jeremy (Barb) of Spring Valley; a daughter, Pamela (Marshall) Goodfellow of Centerville, Ohio; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a brother, Gordon (Janna) of Knoxville, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his wife, in 2000, a daughter, three brothers and two sisters.
Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Hindt Funeral Home in Grand Meadow, and an hour before the service Wednesday at the church.
