Robert Nichols — Stewartville

STEWARTVILLE — A memorial Mass of Christian Burial for Robert Nichols was at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Stewartville; the Rev. Matt Fasnacht officiated. Burial was in St. Bernard’s Catholic Cemetery; the combined American Legion and VFW color guard provided military honors.

Mr. Nichols, 83, of Grand Meadow, formerly of Stewartville, died Saturday (March 28, 2009) at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester.

He was born April 4, 1925, in Eyota. He graduated from Eyota High School and served in the Navy from 1942 to 1946, during WWII. On Dec. 27, 1947, he married Jean Sass at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Rochester. He attended Winona State and the Minnesota School of Business. He worked at Jahns Implement in Racine, and owned and operated Nichols Accounting in Rochester and in Denver.

Mr. Nichols was a lifetime member of the VFW and American Legion in Colorado, and served as District Commander of the American Legion in Cañon City, Colo. After retiring, he and his wife moved to Stewartville. They moved to Meadows Assisted Living in Grand Meadow in April 2008. They were members of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Stewartville.


Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Ann Schill of Denver and Catherine (Robert) Vicknair of Osage, Minn.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Frances Smykal of Hopkins, Minn. He was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother.

Griffin-Gray Funeral Home of Stewartville was in charge of arrangements.
