Official says Postville meatpacking plant could reopen soon

Associated Press

POSTVILLE, Iowa — A court-appointed receiver for Agriprocessors Inc. says the company’s kosher meatpacking plant in Postville could reopen next week.

Joseph Sarachek has told The Cedar Rapids Gazette that the company has no revenue coming in to feed hundreds of thousands of chickens, which will soon be too old to slaughter.

He says a lender has agreed to finance a three-week operations budget pending court approval on Monday.

Sarachek says employees who return immediately will receive their back pay and have a job. Under the bankruptcy process, he says it would take weeks to get back pay.

Sarachek was appointed by a New York bankruptcy judge to oversee the company, which had been run by the Rubashkin family of New York.

He has hired two veteran meat industry executives familiar with the kosher process and says the Rubashkins are no longer in charge of the plant and are not involved in making any decisions.
