Air-improvement plans set
The Beijing city government has announced a sweeping plan to stop construction and close heavy industry to improve air quality ahead of the Olympics.
The city’s environmental protection body said today that the plans include stopping all digging and pouring of concrete on construction sites as of mid-July. Nineteen heavy-polluting industries have been told to cut their emissions by 30 percent.
Pollution — in addition to the violence in Tibet and other human rights issues — has been a major concern for China in the lead up to the Olympics.
