One arrested, one at large in attempted armed robbery

From staff reports

Rochester police have jailed one of two men who are suspected in an armed robbery attempt late Wednesday afternoon at a northwest city apartment.

"One suspect remains at large," said Rochester police Capt. Brian Winters. The second man, who was not identified, fled and is being sought by police.

The suspect awaiting arraignment in Olmsted County’s jail was fighting with another man on the front lawn of the Mile Manor Apartments in the 1600 block of Fourth Street Northwest when police arrived Wednesday afternoon. The other man, also an occupant of the unit, was treated for an apparent head injury at Saint Marys Hospital and was released.

Police want to talk with more witnesses. At least three gunshots were fired — one inside and two outdoors, Winters said. The apartment’s half-dozen or more occupants are not considered suspects, Winters said.

When the robbers arrived, they turned their guns on the people in the apartment and ordered them to the floor, police said. But several people jumped back up and started fighting with the assailants.

The armed robbery attempt "does not appear to be a a random incident," Winters said.

A police search of the apartment turned up a bullet hole in the wall and some unspecified DNA, along with other evidence that squared with witness accounts, he said. A small-caliber handgun was found outside of the apartment.

The robbery suspect now in custody is being held pending felony charges of aggravated robbery and first-degree burglary, as well as assault.
