Packers end regular season on a high note

CANNON FALLS — The Austin wrestlers finished the regular season with three dual meets on Saturday and won all of them.

The Austin Packers beat Farmington, Triton, and St. Croix Lutheran in their mat action at the six-team event.

Cannon Falls played host to the six teams, offering them a place to host some dual meets in an effort to make up matches lost over the past week. Some teams competed in two duals, some had three duals, and others had four duals. This was not a tournament, but rather a bunch of dual meets.

Austin opened the day of duals with a 50-21 win over Farmington. The Austin boys then beat Triton 35-33 in the second dual of the day.

The dual against the Triton Cobras came down to the 215-pound match as Matt Edgar of the Packers won in overtime against Josh Quisnel. Edgar recorded his 75th career victory in this match with the win over Quisnel, who is ranked sixth in class A.

"In the match, each wrestler exchanged takedown attempts," Austin coach Bill Kinney said of Edgar’s overtime win.

"Edgar escaped for one point in the second period. He then rode out Quisnel in the third period for an apparent 1-0 victory. But, the referee called stalling on Edgar after the match was over. The stalling point sent the match into overtime, then Quisnel was called for stalling and Edgar won 2-1."

Austin finished up with a 51-28 win over St. Croix Lutheran. In the final dual, Sam Stier of Austin got a pin in the third period and this was his 50th career win.

Undefeated wrestlers for the Packers included: Jim McDermott at 3-0 with a pin, improves to 27-4 record on the season; Howie Underwood 3-0 with a pin, now 14-11 on the year; Trevor Conway 3-0 with two pins, 6-2 record; Stier 3-0 with a pin, improves to 21-11 on the season (16-4 since the Christmas break); Ethan Eggum 3-0 with a pin, 14-6 overall record; Winsky 2-0 with two pins, 15-9 on the season; and Edgar 3-0 with two pins, now a 29-0 record.

"This was the kind of event we needed coming off of the eight-day lay off," Kinney concluded. "Our team was able to wrestle some good competition, get several matches in, and experience a great deal of success. We hope to ride this wave (4-0 since the break) into the Section 1AAA tournament. The seeding is (Monday night) and I expect us to be in the sixth spot out of 12 teams."

Austin finished the regular season with a 9-17 overall record. The Section 1AAA preliminaries will be held on Thursday at a site to be determined.
