Packers roll 7-0 over Faribault

Post-Bulletin, Austin MN

FARIBAULT — The Austin Packers boys tennis team got back to a .500 overall record with a win over Faribault in a Big Nine Conference dual meet.

The visiting Packers swept the action on Thursday with a 7-0 win over the Faribault Falcons.

Drew Halvin won at love in the first set of No. 1 singles to set the tone for the Packers. Halvin went on to win in straight sets as did the rest of the singles players for the Packers.

"I thought we played great in the road win," Austin coach Tom Tauchnitz said. "When you play competition that’s maybe a little less talented than you are sometimes you have a tendency to play down to your opponent. We did an excellent job of concentrating and staying focused even though the matches were not that close.

John Register lost only one point in each set of his win for the Packers at No. 2 singles. Matt Duren won the first set at love in No. 3 singles, and Patrick Wagner also rolled to an easy win at No. 4 singles.

So thorough was the victory for the Packers that their coach had a chance to watch the younger players and ponder the future of his program.

"I had a chance to really watch our Junior Varsity and I thought they played extremely well," Tauchnitz said. "We had them play the Faribault varsity after the varsity match and our JV won 8-5.

"It’s really a credit to my co-coaches Patty Urlick and Gary Olson. They are doing such an excellent job of developing the young talent. By the time they get to me on the varsity they are well prepared for the challenge."

Austin (2-2, 2-1 Big Nine) plays host to a non-conference dual meet on Monday when Mason City, Iowa, pays a visit to the Paulson Tennis Courts.
