Firing a total of 78 shots-on-goal in Saturday’s girls hockey game helped the Austin Packers halt a two-game losing streak.

The plethora of shots led to a 5-0 win for Austin over Rochester Century in the Big Nine Conference game at Riverside Arena.

Catherine Wagner scored a pair of goals to lead the Austin offense on the day. Abby Gallaher, Alex Larson, and Ashley Arhart also scored goals for the Packers in the victory on their home ice.

"We skated hard and forechecked pretty well," Austin coach Denny Bray said.

"Our defenseman held the blue line and we didn’t give them very many shots. All the girls hustled and we put three good periods together for the win."

Gallaher got things rolling with the first Packers goal of the afternoon inside the final five minutes of the first period.

This was merely a prelude of the offensive onslaught to come. The Packers had 20-plus shots in each period.

Larson scored to make it 2-0 midway through the second period. Less than a minute later, Arhart scored a short-handed goal and the rout was on.

Wagner scored early in the third period to make it 4-0.

The senior forward then capped the lopsided win for the Packers with an unassisted goal on the power play goal later in the final period.

The visiting Century Panthers dropped to 2-22 with the loss. Century goalie Liz Maidl had 73 saves, and this came just one day after she made 61 stops in a shutout loss to Albert Lea.

Audrey DeVries, the Austin goalie, had a much quieter day in the net and needed to make just eight saves to record the shutout.

Austin (10-11-3) closes out the regular season on Tuesday night against Mankato East at Riverside Arena.
