Pedestrian hit by car, hospitalized

From staff reports

An 83-year-old woman remains hospitalized at Saint Marys this morning after she was hit by a car as she tried to walk across Salem Road.

Rochester Police Capt. Jim Pittenger said Winifred Donoghue, 83, "thought she could cross in time," when she began walking north across Salem Road about 6:20 a.m. today.

She was struck by an eastbound car driven by 42-year-old Amir Avdic of Rochester. Pittenger said Avdic tried to avoid hitting Donoghue and officers found 120-foot-long skid marks at the accident scene. Pittenger did not know how far Donoghue's body was thrown by the impact.

A Mayo Clinic spokeswoman said Donoghue was being evaluated and her condition was not available at mid-morning.

Police are investigating the incident, Pittenger said.
