BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- Planet Hollywood has closed its restaurant at the Mall of America after nearly a decade in the Twin Cities.
The parent company of the movie-themed restaurant, Planet Hollywood International Inc., said its lease allowed for an early exit Tuesday without penalty from its fourth-floor spot at the megamall.
About 35,000 people turned out for Planet Hollywood's grand opening at the mall in December 1993.
Mall of America spokeswoman Monica Davis wouldn't say whether another restaurant would replace Planet Hollywood.

Planet Hollywood International has been suffering from poor sales and from competition from other theme restaurants, resulting in two Chapter 11 bankruptcy filings since 1998. The company survived each, but it closed 55 locations and cut corporate staff.
