A child died Saturday evening after he was rescued from the water at Cascade Lake Park, the Rochester Police Department confirmed Sunday night.

Lt. Jim Evenson said the boy died "shortly after the incident." As of Sunday evening, Evenson said he couldn't provide any additional information, such as the child's name or age. He said the department likely will release more information after hearing back from the medical examiner.

A spokeswoman for the city initially released a statement on the situation Saturday evening, saying that the police department, the fire department and other emergency crews responded to Cascade Lake Park just before 7 p.m.

The police department had received a report of a child who was missing and last seen in the lake. The press release from the city said individuals at the lake formed a chain extending 20 to 30 yards and eventually found him. CPR was administered on the child, who was then taken to Mayo Clinic Hospital-Saint Mary's Campus.
