Police: Sex-offender fliers are bogus

From staff reports

Fliers being distributed claiming that a 20-year-old Rochester man is a convicted sex offender are not true, according to police who are investigating the case.

Rochester Police Capt. Jim Pittenger said the fliers were posted at Rochester Community and Technical College, and more were sent to St. John's Catholic Church on Wednesday.

Pittenger said officials at both facilities believe they confiscated most of the fliers before they were publicly posted. However, Pittenger said, it is not known if more have been posted elsewhere in the city.

Pittenger said the fliers claim the 20-year-old Rochester man was convicted of sexually assaulting a child, fined and put on probation. Pittenger said that is not true and the man identified in the poster is not a convicted sex offender.

Pittenger said they have a possible suspect, but she has not been located to be interviewed.
