BYRON — Olmsted County Sheriff's deputies found more than two dozen shell casings in a Salem Township road after a person reported hearing a large number of shots fired early Sunday.

Deputies were called around 4:35 a.m. to the 8000 block of 35th Street Southwest in Salem Township for a report of shots fired, Capt. Scott Behrns said.

A person nearby reported hearing two sets of gun fire. When deputies arrived, they found 26 shell casings in the roadway, Behrns said. The casings were "high caliber rifle shells" not dissimilar to those used in an AR-15 style rifle, according to Behrns.

Nothing in the area appeared to have been hit. Behrns said there was no evidence of criminal activity other than reckless discharge of a firearm. A small vehicle with square tail lights was seen leaving the area going west toward Olmsted County Road 3.
