A Rochester woman is charged with assaulting a man at Essex Place Apartments during the weekend.

At 11:31 p.m. Friday, officers responded to Essex Place, 937 41st St. NW, Rochester, after receiving complaints of yelling and arguing.

They found a man and a woman fighting, Rochester Police Sgt. Eric Strop said. The man had visible injuries.

Edith Antionette Merrell, 26, was arrested and may face charges of  2nd- and 3rd-degree assault. According to Strop, she bit off the tip of the 39-year-old man’s thumb. She also swung a butcher knife at the man several times.

Merrell and the man shared the apartment. The man was taken to Mayo Clinic Hospital-Saint Marys for medical attention.
