A Rochester woman may be without a car after her vehicle was stolen and crashed after someone found the vehicle unlocked and with the key inside.
Rochester police received a report of a 2019 Chevy Equinox stolen from the 100 Block of West Center Street sometime between 5:30 and 7:20 p.m, according to Lt. Mike Sadauskis.
The owner, a 25-year-old woman, told police she had parked her car to go work out and left it unlocked with the key inside. When she came out, her car was gone.
Police spotted the vehicle around 8:20 p.m. eastbound on 19th Street Northwest near its intersection with 26th Street Northwest. A traffic stop was initiated in the area of 19th Street Northwest and Assisi Drive Northwest.
The car did not stop and instead began to accelerate, driving through an intersection and eventually coming to a stop after rear-ending a vehicle in the 2200 block of Elton Hills Drive Northwest. The driver of the Equinox got out of the vehicle and fled on foot.
The car that was hit ended up in the front yard of a home. No one was injured.
Police used dogs to try and track the suspect but did not locate him, Sadauskis said.
The Equinox sustained "severe damage," Sadauskis said.
