CLAREMONT -- Two people in a car that collided with a truck loaded with fertilizer died in a head-on crash on U.S. Highway 14 in Dodge County Wednesday evening.
Jay Wayne Logan, 57, and Elizabeth Ann Logan, 52, both of New Richland, were killed when the car they were in collided head-on with a truck.
The crash happened shortly after 6 p.m. near county highway 3 east of Claremont.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the driver of a Ford Fusion heading east on Highway 14 crossed the centerline of the two-lane highway and collided head-on with a semi heading west.
The semi went into the north ditch of the highway, rolled on its side and the cab caught fire. The driver, Merritt Lyle Davis, 75, of Cleveland, Minn., was able to escape the cab and was taken to Mayo Cinic Hospital - Saint Marys campus with non-life threatening injuries.
The couple were pronounced dead at the scene, said Sgt. Troy Christianson, of the Minnesota State Patrol. That car came to rest in the south ditch of the highway after the collision, according to reports.
Traffic was rerouted onto Dodge County Highway 5, through Claremont to county highway 1 on the west side of Claremont.
The truck was loaded with 27,000 pounds of fertilizer, Christianson said.
A GoFundMe page was started Friday afternoon for the couple's two children. In it's first four hours, more than $3,300 was raised.
