AUSTIN — Austin police are investigating the death of an 18-year-old woman after finding her body next to a house in the 800 block of 8th Ave. SW in Austin, according to local news reports.

The father of the young woman found the body lying on a sidewalk next to the house. When police arrived, they saw a man on the roof of the house. The man fled, but was later arrested and taken into custody.

The deceased woman was an Austin High School student.

Austin Police Chief David Mckichan this afternoon said the investigation is currently focused on the young woman's cause of death.

An Austin investigator was in Rochester this afternoon awaiting word on the autopsy. He said the department was not releasing the name of the suspect or the woman at this point. A 9 a.m. police press briefing was planned for Tuesday.

Austin police officials were working with Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and medical examiner's office on the case.

In a press statement released to local media, an Austin Public School official said the District Response Team was working with Austin High School staff and district counselors to provide support to the AHS community, "as we have learned that an AHS student passed away (over) the weekend."
