‘Queens’ won’t make trip to Winona

Associated Press

WINONA — In what might be the end of an era, three large paddlewheelers won’t make the trip to Winona and other communities on the upper Missippi River this year.

City leaders have received word that there is no buyer for the fleet of the American Queen, Mississippi Queen, and the Delta Queen, so the 2009 cruise season has been suspended.

Pat Mutter is the director of Visit Winona. She says the city always welcomed the boats and their passengers, who liked to take tours of the city and shop downtown.

The fleet has been for sale since early this year, but it hasn’t sold.

The parent company, Majestic America Lines, has decided to suspend the fleet’s operations.
