RCTC softball squad loses doubleheader to St. Cloud

ST. CLOUD — Rochester Community and Technical College dropped a softball doubleheader to St. Cloud Tech on Saturday. The losses could hurt the Yellowjackets’ chances to earn a regional berth.

St. Cloud hit three runs, two in the first game, in posting 6-5 and 10-5 victories. RCTC, which is assured a state berth next weekend, needs to place in the top two of its division to earn a Region XIII appearance.

"We had runners on, but we didn’t find a way to get them in," RCTC coach Jean Musgjerd said.

RCTC led 3-0 in the first game before St. Cloud rallied. Jenny Zierden’s grand slam with two outs in the third inning was the big hit.

"That kind of took the punch out of the first game," Musgjerd said.

Jessica O’Leary was 2-for-4 with a solo homer and stolen base for RCTC. Erin Tilford was 2-for-3 while Jill Johnson and Lindsey Gjere were both 2-for-4. Tilford and Gjere both had a double and RBI.

In the second game, Tilford was 2-for-4. O’Leary was 1-for-2 with a stolen base and Mel Schmidt was 1-for-2 with an RBI.

RCTC also had to play without No. 3 hitter Nicole Crowson, who is out with a stress fracture in her leg.

The Yellowjackets (16-14, 14-6 MCCC Southern Division) play host to division leader Ridgewater today at 3:30 p.m. in a makeup doubleheader. RCTC concludes its regular season with a doubleheader at Riverland on Tuesday.
