Rebels baseball wins third straight

SPRING GROVE — The batting averages for the Southland Rebels soared in a 20-8 win over Spring Grove on Friday.

This non-conference baseball game ended via the 10-run rule in six innings. Cody Kirkpatrick was the winning pitcher for Southland.

The visiting Rebels scored multiple runs in each of the first three innings to put the game on ice. The big blast came in the top of the third when the Rebels scored six runs.

Brian Voigt provided the offensive highlight of the inning with a three-run home run. There were a number of hitting heroes on the day as the Rebels won their third straight game.

"We hit the ball extremely well," Rebels coach Scott Retterath said. "Anytime you get that many hits, the ball looks like a pumpkin to the guys. The whole lineup hit the ball hard and Brian launched another long one."

Mitch Schroeder, Derek Emanuel, Nate Oxley, Adam Nelson, and Winston Smith all had multiple hits for the Rebels in the lopsided win.

Kirkpatrick had five strikeouts and no walks in going five innings on the hill. He ran into a little bit of trouble in the bottom of the fifth when Chris Connelly of Spring Grove hit a home run, but there was a lot of cushion for the Rebels hurler.

After the Lions scored four runs in the fifth, the Rebels responded with five runs in the top of the sixth. This would finish the game on the 10-run rule after the home team was retired in the bottom of the frame.

"Cody did a good job until he got tired in the fifth inning and they got some runs," coach Retterath said. "Still, he pitched extremely well and didn’t have any walks. Not issuing any free passes made me very happy."

Southland (6-2) plays at Goodhue on Monday.
