Rebels girls lose close battle at home
Post-Bulletin, Austin MN
ROSE CREEK — The Southland Rebels softball team lost 8-7 to Blooming Prairie on Monday.
Errors and walks were the main culprits in the non-conference loss by the Rebels. The Southland girls committed a total of seven errors on the day.
Brandi Schammel took the pitching loss for Southland. Erica Manske was the winning pitcher.
The Rebels trailed 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth when they raised the excitement level at the Rose Creek City Park with a big rally. Southland scored four runs in the fourth to take the lead.
Sheri Swenson started the four-run rally for the Rebels with a walk. After moving to second on a fielder’s choice, Swenson scored on a single from Teryn Coffman.
Heather Sheely was then hit by a pitch to put two runners aboard. After the second out of the inning, Chelsey Smith was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Hilary Johnson then stroked a single to score two runs. Smith next scored on a passed ball, but Johnson was cut down out at the plate on the play to end the rally.
"We did a good job of getting clutch hits in that rally," Southland coach Greg Schulte said. "We took the lead with the big rally and held it heading into the sixth inning, but then we had a few errors."
The visiting Blossoms rallied for four runs in the top of the sixth to take a 7-5 lead. The Rebels then answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame. The Blossoms came back with the winning run in the top of the seventh inning.
Southland (0-6) returns to Three Rivers Conference play today at St. Charles.
