RED WING, Minn. - Red Wing Grain has completed building one of the largest grain bins in Minnesota, just off U.S. 61 north of town.
The 1.3 million bushel bin will supplement Red Wing Grain's main elevator downtown that loads barges with grain.
"With uncertainty of barges at certain times of the year, it's nice to have that extra cushion for farmers to keep unloading," said Jim Larson, general manager of Red Wing Grain.
During last year's flooding of the Mississippi River, barge traffic was limited and at times there was nowhere to put the grain that piled up, Larson said. The new bin will solve that problem.
The company broke ground in March and will start using the bin this fall. Red Wing Grain, which has 12 employees, buys grain from farmers, and ships it on barges to sell it. Red Wing Grain is half owned by Ag Partners of Goodhue and half by Cargill.
