Renovations at Saint Elizabeth’s underway

Post-Bulletin, Rochester MN

WABASHA — Renovation work is under way at Saint Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Wabasha.

Aging facilities, now 47 years old, and advancing technologies are the primary reasons for the upgrades, said John Fillmore, maintenance and facilities manager, who is serving as general contractor for the project. Since demolition began, the medical center’s maintenance crew and a team of contractors have replaced an inadequate heating and ventilation system.

During the next few months, 13 patient rooms will be renovated to include the ability to serve bariatric patients and those requiring isolation. Features of the renovation include: handicapped-accessible bathroom/shower facilities in each room; larger windows to promote natural lighting; upgraded systems to accommodate an expanded electronic information system and medical technology; a new nurse call system to reduce noise levels; personal temperature controls, and a soothing, less institutionalized environment.

"It’s always challenging to minimize the disruption of a renovation project in the midst of serving our patients," said Tracy Gulbranson, director of acute care nursing. "But these inconveniences will be well worth it in the end. Our nursing team has been very engaged in providing ideas and suggestions for improvement. This upgrade is long overdue and will positively (affect) the safety and quality of care for our patients."

The project is expected to be completed toward the end of the summer. An open house and tours of the renovated facilities will be scheduled later this year.
