Richard J. Carlson — Red Wing

RED WING — The funeral for Richard J. Carlson will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel in Red Wing, with Rev. Charles Uhlik officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Red Wing.

Mr. Carlson, 83, of Red Wing, died Friday (Nov. 21, 2008) at St. Brigid’s at Hi-Park.

Richard Julius Carlson was born Aug. 18, 1925, in Red Wing, and attended Red Wing Central High School. He served in the Marine Corps from 1943 to 1946 and spent 20 months in the Pacific during World War II. He took part in the Iwo Jima campaign and the occupation of Japan and was honorably discharged in 1946.

On Sept. 17, 1948, he married Shirley Ann Hodge. He worked at Red Wing Potteries before becoming an auto mechanic and worked at McCoy-Curran Garage. He also worked in later years at other shops. He was also a custodian for the Goodhue County Court House for 10 years, retiring in 1990.

Survivors include his wife; four children, Bonnie (Bruce) Johnson of Red Wing, Terry of Highland Mills, N.Y., JoEllen (Dave) Haustein of Red Wing and David of Dallas, Texas; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Harold.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Mahn Family Funeral Home in Red Wing, and an hour prior to the service Wednesday at the funeral home.
