Riverland students honored for academics

Riverland Community College students Maria Ayala Ramirez, Ruth Dehoogh and Stefanie Rouse recently were named to the 2008 All-Minnesota Academic Team in recognition of their academic achievements, leadership accomplishments and service to their college and community.

The three were among 27 Minnesota two-year college students honored at a ceremony on March 6 in Bloomington, Minn.

Ramirez, of Austin, is pursuing a career in medicine. She is involved in the campus International Club and was a volunteer big sister in the summer "Be Your Best" program for high-school students. She plans to transfer to the University of Minnesota to pursue a career as a physician’s assistant.

Dehoogh, of Adams, is pursuing a career in teaching English as a second language. She teaches ESL at an Adult Learning Center and tutors high-school students in math. She also serves as a middle-school youth-group helper and a member of RIOT, a student-led Christian fellowship group.

Rouse, of Albert Lea, is enrolled in the associate degree nursing program. She works as a YMCA coordinator for an elementary afterschool program. She also has worked with the mentally disabled and has been involved in her church.
