Robert Eugene Gehring -- Austin

AUSTIN -- The funeral for Robert Eugene Gehring will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Edward's Catholic Church with the Rev. Joseph Fogal officiating. Burial will be in Cedar City Cemetery in rural Austin, with military rites by VFW Post 1216 and American Legion Post 91.

Mr. Gehring, 76, of Austin, died Wednesday morning (Dec. 11, 2002), at his home.

He was born Sept. 16, 1926, in Iroquois, S. D., where he attended school. He then worked in construction and for the railroad. In 1945, he entered the U.S. Army and was stationed in Europe and Manila. He was discharged in 1946. On July 20, 1952, he married Clariene "Clo" Dirks in Iroquois. They lived in Huron, S.D., where he was a truck driver for Nash Finch grocery stores for 19 years. He then worked as a grocery store manager for 19 years in many locations in the Midwest. Mrs. Gehring died April 1, 1986. On Nov. 22, 1986, he married Juanita Pieper in Austin, where they made their home. He was a former member of First United Methodist Church, and enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling, camping with his family, visiting casinos and bowling.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Scharrel (Michael) Krause of Ham Lake, Minn., Linda (Steven) Wobschall of Austin, and Sandra (Michael) Smith of Janesville, Wis.; two sons, Randall (Ann) of Ottumwa, Iowa, and Jeffrey (Tim Anderson) of Golden Valley, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Two sisters and two brothers preceded him in death.

Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin, and at the church one hour before the service.
