Rochester Century, John Marshall and Mayo finished 2-3-4 in the boys portion of the Jim Flim Invitational cross country race Saturday at St. Mary's College in Winona.
Century's Ben Puhl had the highest finish. He was second, 11 seconds behind Garrett Heath of Winona, the top-ranked runner in the state. Puhl is ranked sixth in the state. He completed the course in 15:45.
"This was a good day for fast times," said Century coach Darald Bothun. He said Century's second-place finish was a big improvement over fourth place in the same race last year.
John Marshall's top runner was Seyfu Hassan, who finished fifth in 17:04. Mayo's top finisher was Hans Hebl who was eighth in 17:31.
"Our newcomers are improving, giving more depth to the varsity," said Mayo coach John Trolander. He said it was Mayo's best showing.

In the girls race, Century was also second, paced by a fourth-place finish from Challis Firl in 16:02. Caitlin Callahan was seventh in 16:27.
Winona Cotter won the girls race, with all five runners finishing in the top 20. JM's best finish in the girls race was 26th, by Anne Slisz. Mayo's Tessa Schreiber was 31st in 17:47.
"Six of our varsity runners had their best times of the year," said Mayo coach Michelle Allen.
Zumbrota-Mazeppa/Kenyon-Wanamingo sisters Dana and Stephanie Peters were first and third, respectively. Dana won it in 15:31, while Stephanie's time was 16:00.
